Mary E Shares Her Story Through Music
This Saturday 23 May, local artist Mary E will perform at Gnulli Sounds at Gwoonwardu Mia, sharing music born from personal experience, resilience, and a vision for a better future for young people in community.
Creating Music with BLOODBEATS
Mary created her song: "Dreaming Of What I Got" with the BLOODBEATS Creality Team in February 2026, working alongside Cortext and Moana to turn her story into music.
“When COREXT and Moana were at Gwoonwardu Mia for the BLOODBEATS program, I left work that day and wrote those words to that song that night. I went back the next morning and we put the music together. The next day we went and filmed it.”
Growing Up Between Communities
Mary grew up between Subiaco, Carnarvon, Burungarrah and Meekatharra, spending time with grandparents and in foster homes throughout her childhood.
Those experiences now drive her commitment to protecting and guiding the next generation.
“I grew up in a generational cycle of curse and I want to teach my kids to break from that,” Mary said.
“I tell my kids to keep being leaders, not followers. I won’t let my kids be around violence. It’s all about kids and the future for me, what I want for kids in the community. I try to get through and be a role model. A better future.”
Using Music to Inspire Change
Mary hopes her music can also encourage more Aboriginal people into employment and leadership.
“Where I grew up there’s a lot going on with our Indigenous mob, and I’d like to be a voice that it’s not hard to be in employment. Be a role model.”
